Workshop - Preaching Through Collective Trauma

We preach to communities who have been through something.
They carry racialized histories, institutional disappointments, political fracture, public grief, and private shame. Much of this is unspoken. It lives in the body of the congregation - in what feels fragile, reactive, easily threatened, or quietly withdrawn.
When we do not name collective trauma in the text, we risk preaching abstractions to wounded people. And when we rush to resolution, we may unintentionally reinforce the very fragmentation we hope to heal.
John 21 offers a different pastoral imagination. It is not merely a resurrection epilogue. It is a community in the aftermath of terror. The disciples have witnessed public execution. They have scattered. Peter has denied. Their shared future has collapsed. “I’m going fishing” is not nostalgia; it is disorientation.
In this workshop, we will read John 21 as a narrative of collective trauma and attend to how Jesus walks a fractured community through fear and shame without humiliation or coercion. Drawing from a Wesleyan vision of sanctification as participation in the perichoretic life of Father, Son, and Spirit, we will explore how preaching might reflect the relational pattern of the Triune God: presence that establishes safety, kenotic love that restores dignity, and communion that reconstitutes belonging before vocation.
In a polarized church, preaching becomes sanctifying work when it mirrors this divine life - not bypassing conflict, not intensifying domination, but remaining long enough for repair.
