Workshop - Reactivity in the Pew
Preachers' Conference 2026

What if the parishioner who storms out during a sermon, the volunteer who shuts down when given feedback, or the longtime member who suddenly disappears isn’t being difficult — but is dysregulated? This practical presentation invites pastoral leaders, ministry staff, and lay leaders to see congregant behavior through a trauma-informed lens.
Drawing on foundational concepts from neuroscience and trauma theory — including polyvagal theory, nervous system states, and the window of tolerance — participants will gain a working understanding of how unresolved trauma shapes the way people experience community, authority, conflict, and spiritual connection. Church environments can be powerful sites of healing — and equally powerful triggers for those carrying hidden wounds.
Participants will leave with a more compassionate framework for understanding difficult behavior, practical language for connection and de-escalation, and a renewed appreciation for their role as regulated, co-regulating presences in the lives of those they serve.
Participants will explore:
• How the nervous system responds to perceived threat — and why church isn’t always a safe cue
• The difference between willful defiance and trauma-driven reactivity
• Practical strategies for nervous-system-informed ministry environments
• How leaders’ own regulation shapes the emotional climate of their congregation
No clinical background required. Designed for anyone who leads, shepherds, or cares for people in a faith community.
